Aceyalone and Toki Wright Storm the Orpheum for a Night of Live Hip-Hop

Local booking agency Ubiquitous Bookings aims to turn the classic venue around to encourage and support live music in Duluth.

DULUTH, MINN., 6/2/2009 – The classic Orpheum Theater, often a quiet pillar of culture and history in this old port city, will be buzzing with bass and spilling heads into the streets on Saturday, June 27, as Ubiquity Bookings presents a one-night live performance from West-Coast indie rapper Aceyalone.

The show also features Minneapolis’s Toki Wright, who is the newest addition to the Rhymesayers Entertainment roster, along with Big Wiz and the Long Doe Camp. Special guest Truthmaze, who has been rapping and doing spoken word in the Twin Cities since the 1980s, will also be dropping knowledge on the mic.

Aceyalone and Toki Wright recently performed at the notorious Soundset ’09 Festival in Shakopee, Minn., alongside legions of other independent rap artists from across the country. Local promotion and booking agency Ubiquitous Bookings takes credit for putting this night of live hip-hop together, but in truth they give credit to the scene in Duluth, which is often overlooked despite its potency.

“I grew up in Duluth, and I’ve seen how music fans react when you bring them something exciting to go see,” says Sarah Nordlund, co-owner of Ubiquitous Bookings. “Unfortunately there just aren’t that many artists that come up here. But with this event and future events at the Orpheum, we definitely aim to change that.”

The ongoing event, Twin Portz Hip Hop, is all about that goal. Nordlund and her cohorts have established a good relationship with the iconic venue, and both parties are interested in continuing down the wild road they have begun to pioneer.

Their first event at the venue was a counter-concert to the Soulja Boy Tell’em performance happening on campus. Many students opposed the performance by the mainstream club-style rapper, who is known partially for his misogynistic lyrics. Nordlund and Ubiquitous Bookings jumped on the opportunity to counter with a “real hip-hop show,” and the turn out was phenomenal.
